Seasonal feeding on bark by gorillas : An unexpected keystone food ?
نویسنده
چکیده
There are a number of reports in the literature of' primates feeding on the bark of trees, but bark has only occasionally been considered as a major food to be studied in its own right (e.g., Waser, 1977; Beeson, 1987; Nonis, 1988). All the great apes feed on bark at certain times, and clearly have preferences as to which species they choose (e.g., Schaller, 1963; Jones & Sabater Pi. 1971; Castmtr, 1975: Ntshtda, 1976; Goodall, 1977; Rodman, 1977; Sabater Pi, 1977, 1979). Evidence has been presented that bark feeding by chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) is a 'seasonal phenomenon related to scarcity of preferred fruits (Ntshtda, 1976; Rodman, 1977), and similar conclusions have been drawn from studies of blue monkeys (Cercopithecus mitis) living near plantations of exotic pines (Beeson, 1987; Maganga & Wrtght, 1992). Bark feeding is also well known in other mammals where, again, it often occurs seasonally (e.g., elephants, Wing & Buss, 1970; grey squirrels, Kenward & Parish, 1986). Western lowland gorillas (Gorilla g. gorilla) were recently reported to eat bark during the dry season in Gabon (Rogers et aI., 1988; Williamson, 1988; Tutin et al., 1991), but no detailed data were given. This paper presents information from the last two years of field study in 1990 and 1991, when bark from a single species of tree was an important seasonal food.

Fracture toughness of mountain gorilla (Gorilla gorilla beringei) food plants.
Mountain gorillas, the largest extant primates, subsist almost entirely on plant matter. Moreover, their diet includes a substantial amount of structural material, such as bark and stems, which other primates tend to avoid. Accordingly, the robust masticatory apparatus of gorillas may be adaptive to this presumably tough diet; however, quantitative information on this subject is lacking. In thi...

The most important environmental factor explaining interspecies variation in ecology and sociality of the great apes is likely to be variation in resource availability. Relatively little is known about the activity patterns of western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla), which inhabit a dramatically different environment from the well-studied mountain gorillas (G. beringei beringei). Thi...

Data on the time budgets of mountain gorillas (Gorilla gorilla beringei) were collected during field studies in the Virunga Volcanoes region of Rwanda and Zaire. Focal sampling was used to determine the proportion of time that individuals of different agehex classes spent in several mutually exclusive activity states. The gorillas spent the majority of daylight hours feeding; most of the rest o...
متن کاملThe Influence of Seasonal Frugivory on Nutrient and Energy Intake in Wild Western Gorillas
The daily energy requirements of animals are determined by a combination of physical and physiological factors, but food availability may challenge the capacity to meet nutritional needs. Western gorillas (Gorilla gorilla) are an interesting model for investigating this topic because they are folivore-frugivores that adjust their diet and activities to seasonal variation in fruit availability. ...

Seasonal changes in the diel feeding patterns of the zooplanktivorous icefish (Neosalanx taihuensis), which is an endemic species of China, were studied in the large, shallow eutrophic Lake Chaohu of China during the autumn of 2002 and summer of 2003. The results of the diel feeding rhythm indicate that icefish is a visual particulate feeder. There were large differences in diet composition and...
